What the research says
Limited evidence. Evidence is limited. The National Academies found limited evidence that cannabidiol (CBD) improves anxiety symptoms in a public-speaking test for people with social anxiety. THC can ease anxiety at low doses for some people and worsen it at higher doses for others.

Risks and precautions

Anxiety: 5 common questions
Does anxiety qualify for a medical marijuana card?
Not by name in the programs we track, though related symptoms such as chronic pain may qualify. Either way, a provider licensed in your state has to evaluate you and agree that cannabis is appropriate.
Which states list anxiety as a qualifying condition?
None of the state programs we track list it by name. Check your state page for related conditions that do. Lists change, so confirm on your state's page before you apply.
Can I get certified for anxiety online?
In most states that list it, the first visit must be in person. Renewals can usually be done online afterwards.
Is anxiety a qualifying condition everywhere?
No. Some states list it, some don't, and some let the doctor certify any condition they think cannabis will help. Check your state page.
Can THC make anxiety worse?
It can, especially at higher doses. That's why doctors usually recommend starting with low-THC or CBD-rich products.
